While visiting a friend who has young kids and a couple of dogs, I noticed that their house decorations have changed over the years. They are pretty much nonexistent now. I asked about it and the response was simple: we put our delicate items away in high traffic areas because they got broken or knocked over too often. This meant removing vases, photo frames and other items that bring them comfort in their home. They missed having fresh flowers and seeing their family photos next to their coffee or wine as they sat on the couch. I sought to design a side table that could display their items securely. After several concept and shape iterations, I arrived at a Y-shaped motif that decreases in size as it spills over to the legs. The table top is secured to the side legs without hardware. Each cutout is CNC machined with an angled bit. The bases of the items have the same angle at the bottom so they will not fall through. Vases, cups and photo frames can be easily placed into a cutout on the table surface and will not move if the table is shaken or bumped into. I picked a variety of muted colors for the objects to fit into a family living room environment.
